Doing the Work of God

I frequently hear people say, “I want to do the work that God would have me to do”, or “I want to serve the Lord, and do his will.” Those are truly noble desires. I wish sincerely that all men truly had such desires. But after expressing such desires, I see those same people attempting (And usually their “attempts” are not very great!) to live by the law. They think that if they live by the principles laid down in the law, which they cannot do, they are doing the work of God.

Would you do the work of God? Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us plainly how fallen, sinful men can do the work of God. – “This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent” (John 6:29). By simple faith in Christ, and nothing more, sinners obtain all that God requires and perform all that God commands.
