Christ Our Surety
by Joseph Irons

If He will be surety, He shall smart for it - if He will put Himself in the place of His bride, His wife, as her bridegroom and husband, He must pay all, and suffer all, and endure all that her transgressions have deserved. Blessings on His precious name, He has done it. The whole amount of Divine wrath poured out like a cataract upon His soul - all the vengeance of stern justice waiting with its sword to smite Jehovahs fellow was felt when He bowed His head and died - all the curse of the law, like barbed arrows, penetrated His very soul. He endured all this for His Church. Look at Him in Gethsemane, count those rolling drops of blood that are squeezed from His holy pores.
