Along the same lines as the knowledge that regeneration is of the mind and we covet all our thoughts to be in captivity to Christ came the thought the other day about the meditation of my heart being expressed by the words of my mouth. I find it easier to express myself on paper rather than verbally but that may only be because of a lack of experience in the verbal communication of spiritual truths.

The Holy Spirit makes Christ the supreme object of our meditation in the inner man and what a joy this meditation is. We meditate on the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, His Word all His works, the blessed truths, His providence and His watchcare over us. That is how we lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven, by meditating on His perfection, His righteousness. We meditate on how the Lord Jesus has accomplished the will of the Father for His people.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is a matter of teaching me knowledge (epistemological) from the Word and that is how we have knowledge of Christ, for the Spirit is our teacher and our comforter and applies the Word of God to us. I attach that work to 2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in grace, and in knowledge or our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever. Amen”

We meditate, we study, we read and in these means the Lord has given us our faith may grow exceedingly, we may be encouraged in hope, our love may increase and patience may have its perfect work. We are strengthened in the inner man; we look more to the promises of our Lord and become more fully acquainted with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus. For the saint, the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who He is, His work for us and in us is the most valuable knowledge we will ever have. I prefer it above all other and find myself sometimes during the day, as I go about my work, desiring the quietness of meditating on Him, contemplating Him. The glory belongs to Him now and forever, we will spend eternity with Him and we will continue, I believe, to grow in knowing Him as He is.

While I am here I pray that “My meditation of Him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD.”(Psalm 104:34)

Even so, come Lord Jesus!
