As He pours out His love upon us every moment it affects our lives, it is manifested in us and we are called by Him to remember it and we are taught by His Word how to walk in this glorious love towards our brethren. The world will know us by the love we have towards one another.
“A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another, as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:34, 35)
“With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2)
It isn’t an easy thing to love one another, I know it isn’t easy for anyone to love me, nevertheless we are commanded by the One who loves us. It becomes the desire of our heart to obey, to strive, but we know that we don’t do that perfectly here, far, far from it. But as we grow in grace and in knowledge, we should grow in our love for one another, in all sincerity and it should be uppermost in our mind to love the brethren, in our words and our actions. It is given a high priority in the New Testament, not only by Christ Himself but in the epistles as well and I wonder how often we brush this aside as a trivial.
“If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14.15)
“Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently. (1 Peter 1:22)
“Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.” (1 Peter 3:8) NIV
Let us rejoice in the deep, deep love of Jesus and let us take heart and find joy in this vale of tears as we run the race that is set before us, as we stumble, as we are tested and tried, as we grieve over our sin and let us remember that;
“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.” (Hebrews 12:6)
We are sons and daughters of the Living God who loves us and sent us His Son to rescue us from our sin. No greater love has ever been displayed!
Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Spread his praise from shore to shore
How he loveth, ever loveth,
Changeth never, never-more;
How he watches o’er his loved ones,
Died to call them all his own;
How for them he intercedth,
Watch-eth o’er them from the throne.
