When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. - John 19:30
If we are to have assurance of salvation, we must not go looking to anywhere else other than Christ. "It is finished." Should we attempt to seek assurance elsewhere such as our feelings, or the works of our own hands or volition, it would be like trying to quench our thirst with salt water. Salt water can never quench thirst, as the more one drinks of it, the thirstier one becomes until the impurities of the water kill the individual.
We who believe, we've had enough salt water to last a lifetime. Our clean palates can no longer tolerate such swill. We've found that the only thing we need to quench our thirst is Christ alone! He's a cool glass of water, and His blessings are eternal.
